About Us
The origins of High Country Transportation, Inc. date back to the early 1960’s. Started on the family farm in Eastland, UT, J.W. Crowley and Sons hauled non-regulated commodities such as beans and wheat to market from their base of operations in Southeast Utah. They continued this through the 1960’s and also acquired a wheat/bean elevator in Dove Creek, CO known as High Country Elevators. J.W. Crowley and Sons provided the transportation for their beans and wheat to markets in Texas, California, Arizona and Utah. During the 1970’s they acquired ICC Authority on several lanes to complement their outbound hauls. J.W. Crowley and Sons eventually grew their fleet size to 40 trucks from their headquarters in Dove Creek, CO (approximate population: 600). In the early 1980’s, J.W. Crowley retired and the assets of the trucking business were sold.
In 1985, Brothers Buzz Crowley and Don Crowley (the Sons) founded High Country Transportation, Inc. Buzz and Don still owned High Country Elevators and purchased one used Kenworth W900 and hopperbottom trailer to haul their grain to market in Salt Lake City, UT. Soon after putting number one into service, more trucks were added to the fleet and the grain elevator was sold to concentrate on the trucking business full time. High Country Transportation moved their operations office to Cortez, CO (still maintaining their original office in Eastland, UT) and added flatbed service in addition to the dry bulk (hopperbottom) division. During the 90’s, High Country Transportation grew back to a fleet of 40 trucks providing dry bulk and flatbed service to all 48 states.
In 2006 (at around the 60 truck fleet size), Buzz Crowley retired and sold his portion to family members and key employees. Today, Don Crowley continues on as majority owner and company President overseeing three divisions operating 130 dry bulk and refrigerated trucks. Total employment at High Country Transportation, Inc. has reached 180 drivers and support staff. Healthy growth continues each year as the High Country commitment to high levels of customer service continues to attract new customers. High Country Transportation, Inc. operates three full service terminals (Cortez, CO, Farmington, NM, and Dallas, TX), a railroad transload facilty (Gallup, NM) and the original office in Eastland, UT.
From time to time you can still catch Buzz in a truck delivering a load for High Country and Don takes regular trucking trips to keep up with what is happening on the road with our customers and drivers.
With over 50 years in the trucking business, you can trust High Country Transportation, Inc. to be there safely for customers, drivers and the motoring public.
